What was it like working with James Cameron again?

Sigourney Weaver: I found it less intense than in ALIENS, maybe because we’re both older now. He was much more relaxed this time; he was like a kid in the candy store. The hours were long and everything took longer than expected. But it has been such an adventure and I think because I did work with him before, it was wonderful, I know him well. We picked up where we left off, except I think he’s merrier now, he’s happy, he has kids and a family and he was so excited about working on AVATAR and working with each of us.

What kind of director is he?

Sigourney Weaver: Very intense but wonderful. Jim is always so generous, finding out what we want to try with each scene, or what we think about our characters. He is a very gentle, encouraging director who always makes you feel good about what you are doing. He has worked so hard to create this entire world for AVATAR, the whole concept, the creatures, everything. It is amazing, because Jim actually invented the cameras that shot this movie, he shot every frame. I remember reading the script and thinking that it was just so incredibly ambitious. I’m just so thrilled for him, that he’s pulled it off, you know. He’s done the impossible, which was to create this other world, it is an entirely different way of life. And that’s such an amazing accomplishment. I hope he had a good time doing it.

What was the most challenging aspect of the work for you?

Sigourney Weaver: The challenging part was the motion capture work, you do have to pretend it is Pandora, because you are acting on an empty stage, you have to use your imagination. It is all about being very specific, because you might just have a stick or a feather to react to.

Can you talk about your character’s journey in this film?

Sigourney Weaver: When you meet Grace, she’s working for a company that she hates and hoping to work with Jake’s brother, because he is a very promising scientist and she wants him to help her crack this mystery about Pandora, so she can get the corporation (who are mining on Pandora) to stop mining and protect this world she loves so much. When it turns out that Tommy is dead and has been replaced with Jake (Sam Worthington) she is furious, because she discovers that this ex marine clearly has not got a scientific bone in his body. So during the course of the story, she goes from a difficult position, working for a company that she hates, to trying to break through to find the science she needs that will wake them up to what they’re doing. In the course of the story, she is thrown together with Jake again and again. I think they both fall in love with Pandora and he ends up really teaching Grace how to fight.

What’s the theme of this movie for you?

Sigourney Weaver: I think it’s a story about a young man who comes of age and who finds something to fight for. Avatar is a great love story and it’s the story of a modern conflict. It is a conflict between what you love, what you have to do and what you believe in vs. what people are telling you to do. So it’s a very rich story with creatures and places and huge battles. There is nothing modern and cynical about this story. In many ways it reminds me of my favorite classic films. I used to love the feeling of settling into my seat in the theater and then it would say: ‘David Lean Presents’ or something like that and you would know that you were going to a place that would be extraordinary and that something was going to happen to you that you would be thinking about for days to come and I feel like AVATAR is that kind of movie.

You were essentially the first female action star; do you feel that you changed everything for actresses in some ways?

Sigourney Weaver: Well I think that if it hadn’t been me it would have obviously been another actress (laughs). I really loved the character Ripley (ALIEN). I still see the woman who inspired me to play Ripley, she’s awesome. She works as an environmentalist actually. At the time I played Ripley, women were entering the work force and were taking on jobs only men had done before, in the armed forces and in industry, so I think it was the right time for that to happen. But I am really glad that I got to be a part of that. What I love about Ripley is that I was allowed to play a woman as a complicated character, without a man, without anything and that is still unusual. I sort of blame Ridley Scott for all of that and Jim Cameron, because they love women and respect women. Ridley just let Ripley be a person. ”

You have had such a challenging career, what have been the defining experiences for you so far, do you think?

Sigourney Weaver: I think most of my life changing experiences have been as a parent and as a wife. For a mother, just getting your child through the school system is a heroic job. And when I think of my life, I don’t think of my work, I think of my real life. You know, at home I have my family and I have all the different things that I care about, like human rights. There are lots of causes that I work for and when I’m in New York I end up just spending a lot of time on them. I don’t begrudge it all, I’m saying that I keep incredibly busy.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

Sigourney Weaver: I love to be with my family, I love to do nothing, I love to read, to be in the garden, I love to take walks, play with my dogs and to cook – I am incredibly boring (laughs). My perfect day would be spent in the country, out in nature with the dogs and my husband and maybe my daughter and her boyfriend. We would hike up some small mountain with a picnic, then have a swim and cook hamburgers or something and then go to sleep.

I haven’t read the book so the film wrong stepped me most of the way. Did you know the source material before read the script?

Channing Tatum: I actually read the book first, even before it came out, I got approached for the film and I fell in love with my character John, I had known Nicholas Sparks through The Notebook and A Walk To Remember, I think I cried a lot with The Notebook (laughs). I knew what it did and I knew there was already a starving audience for it, those unbelievable loves, this is more relevant and contemporary than The Notebook for me which drew me more to it.

What was it like working with Richard Jenkins?

Channing Tatum: He’s so overrated (laughs), nah that guy can do anything, he can give you whatever you ask from a character, he is one of the strongest and smartest person I’ve ever met. He helped me through the entire film, I can’t even describe how it is to be in a scene with a guy that makes you better, he’s so smart he manipulates you to be better, it’s ridiculous.

Do you find it more fun to do these more meaty roles than the action films?

Channing Tatum: I find it more exciting. The more action type films they’re fun to do, especially with the physical element, but the REALLY fun stuff like running into a falling building they won’t let you do that, there’s too much money riding on you not getting hurt, but yes there is something exhilarating about it but it’s so different. With this sort of film it’s so much more honest, which excites me more.

You’ve been up in Scotland filming The Eagle of the Ninth can you tell us a bit about that?

Channing Tatum: I’ve loved Kevin Macdonald’s movies for a while now, it was an amazing experience because he wanted to do something really different, he wanted to make all the Romans American, venturing off from Romans being this English speaking very villainous type thing. It was by far the hardest things I’ve ever done, to wake up every single day and know your gonna be freezing cold and wet, 10 times a day, every single day and you know there’s no getting away from it for about 4 months, it was exhausting but very gratifying, it’s gonna be some of the most beautiful scenery you’re ever gonna see. I think I had minor hyperthermia, Jamie Bell almost collapsed. It’s a little more commercial that what he’s made before, it should be great.

Without giving too much away your character go’s through a lot and at times gets the short end of the stick.

Channing Tatum: Yeah, I don’t think when people watch movies they always want a happy story or a happing ending, because life isn’t always like that, hindsight is really 20/20, in your real life I guarantee you will look back and you’ve had to make decisions, sometimes you get pinned into a corner.

I heard they wouldn’t let you use your own handwriting in the film for the film.

Channing Tatum: (laughs) Yes, they would not let me hand write anything because you can’t read what I write, it’s like chicken scratches, worse than a 3 year old’s handwriting.

This year’s MVP of that weird little subgenre is Meskada, a small-town crime movie clearly inspired by the work of the Coens and other noir masters, but not remotely equal to any of them. Taking place in a blank kind of American Anywhere, between two nearby towns rife with class tensions, Meskada has a few good ideas marred by any number of mistakes, from casting to production design to the strained performances boasted by nearly the entire cast. It wouldn’t be fair to pick on a film this small and this obviously destined for a limited release if any, but with names like Kellan Lutz, Rachel Nichols, and Meryl Streep’s daughter Grace Gummer in the lineup, it will be getting attention– and you deserve to be warned.

Another relatively boldface name, Nick Stahl, actually turns in one of the stronger performances as Noah Cordin, a small-town sheriff charged with investigating the clearly accidental murder of an 8-year-old boy, son of local wealthy and influential woman Allison Connor (Laura Benanti). Noah is teamed up with implausibly hot fellow cop Leslie Spencer (Rachel Nichols) in his investigation, and based on what’s basically a stroke of dumb luck, he winds up questioning the roughnecks in his hometown of Caswell, significantly poorer than his new home of Hilliard and more than little resentful of that fact.

Easy A begin with Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) talking into a web cam about how her little white lie ballooned into an uncontrollable monster. She says she will explain her side, the true side of what occurred. She says that she was a nobody that no one noticed outside her best friend Rhiannon (Alyson Michalka). Rhiannon wants to go camping with Olive but Olive lies and says she is going on a date. In reality, she just hangs around the house all weekend singing “Pocketful of Sunshine” by Natasha Bedingfield.

The following Monday, pressed by Rhiannon, Olive lies about losing her virginity to a college guy. Marianne (Amanda Bynes), an overly enthusiastic Christian, overhears her telling the lie and soon it spreads like wildfire.

The school has a conservative teen church group run by Marianne who decides that Olive will be their next project. The group’s harassment disguised as concern comes to head at an English class run by Mr. Griffith (Thomas Haden Church). The class happens to be reading The Scarlet Letter, a novel about adultery and shame. When one of the girls from the church group makes a side comment at Olive, Olive shoots back one of her own. This gets her sent to the principal’s office and Olive is given detention. It is there she sees her classmate Brandon walking out of the office with a bloodied nose.

Later at home, Olive is with her parents and her adopted brother. Her mother Rosemary (Patricia Clarkson) and father Dill (Stanley Tucci) are very liberal and supportive of their daughter and her choices. Brandon comes over later and propositions Olive; she’ll pretend to sleep with him and make him appear straight, when in reality everyone knows he’s gay. She agrees and they pretend to have sex at a public party. Afterwards she bumps into an old crush Todd (Penn Badgley), whom she almost kissed years ago but instead lied about it when he said he wasn’t ready.

Now after apparently sleeping with two guys and the harassment starting to get to her, Olive decides to go with the flow. She begins to wear more provocative clothing and stitches a red ‘A’ to everything she wears. Boys begin to give her gift cards and money to say they’ve done sexual things with her to increase their own popularity, which only increases her rep.

However, things begin to go downhill quickly. Rhiannon, partly jealous of the attention Olive is getting, joins the church group protesting her. Olive is able to reconcile with Marianne but it is destroyed when Marianne’s boyfriend Micah (Cam Gigandet) gets an STD and says Olive gave it to him.

Olive sees Mrs. Griffith (Lisa Kudrow) who is crying and confesses that she is the one who slept with Micah. Olive promises to take the blame to save Mrs. Griffith’s job and marriage.

Olive becomes disillusioned with the fact that though everyone thinks she is sleeping around, no one will take the chance to actually date her. This changes when Anson (Jake Sandvig) comes up to her and asks her out. The date goes sour when Olive sees’ Rhiannon at the restaurant and remembers that she has a crush on Anson. Olive tries to recover and Anson attempts to pay her off, so she asks what they’ll say happened but Anson thinks he will actually get sex and tries to force himself on her. She resists and he drives off. Todd, who works at the restaurant, sees her and offers to drive her home.

Todd tells her that he doesn’t believe the rumor mill and thinks she’s actually great. He remembers how cool she was about not kissing him years ago and wishes she actually was his first kiss (her friend Rhiannon was and he says she was terrible). Olive is touched but says she can’t be with him until she sorts out her life.

Olive proceeds to go to the boys that propositioned her and tells them to fess up but most deny it, or in the case of Brandon who comes out to his parents, leave town altogether. When she goes to Mrs. Griffith to make her come clean, she refuses to and uses her authority as an adult to make it clear Olive won’t be believed over her. Olive runs to Mr. Griffith and tells the truth but immediately regrets how she did it, realizing she just ruined a marriage.

To get everything finally in the open, she does a song and dance number at a pep rally and pretends that she will be doing a sex show via web cam with Todd. In actuality (as the whole movie has been an extended flashback) she confesses what she has done. She also makes up with Rhiannon, apologizing for lying. When she is finishing up, Todd comes by riding a lawnmower and tells her to come out. She closes her web cam confession saying she really likes Todd and maybe she will lose her virginity to him in the future but at the end of the day it is no one’s business but her own. She leaves the house to kiss him and they ride off from the neighborhood on the lawnmower (a joke Olive made earlier on in the piece where she says “Whatever happened to chivalry? Does it only exist in 80′s movies? I want John Cusack holding a boombox outside my window. I wanna ride off on a lawnmower with Patrick Dempsey”).

Pandorum was announced in May 2008 with Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster in lead roles. Christian Alvart was attached to direct the film, based on a script by Travis Milloy. The film was financed by Constantin Film through a joint venture deal with subsidiary Impact Pictures. The partnership helped fund the US$40 million production, as Constantin drew subsidies from Germany’s Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB) regional film fund, the German Federal Film Board (FFA), and the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF). The German Federal Film Fund provided US$6 million to the production, the fund’s second-largest 2008 payout, after US$7.5 million for Ninja Assassin. Filming took place at Babelsberg Studios in Berlin in August 2008.

Summit Entertainment is handling foreign sales and will present Pandorum to buyers at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. Due to Constantin’s involvement, the film will likely see a strong German release. Overture Films will distribute Pandorum in North America, Icon in the United Kingdom and Australia, Svensk in Scandinavia, and Movie Eye in Japan. The film is set up as a possible franchise, so if it performs strongly, Impact Pictures will greenlight sequels.
